Introduction to the Theory of (Non-Symmetric) D...

The purpose of this book is to give a streamlined introduction to the theory of (not necessarily symmetric) Dirichlet forms on general state spaces. It includes both the analytic and the probabilistic part of the theory up to and including the construction of an associated Markov process. It is based on recent joint work of S. Albeverio and the two authors and on a one-year-course on Dirichlet forms taught by the second named author at the University of Bonn in 1990/9l. It addresses both researchers and graduate students who require a quick but complete introduction to the theory. Prerequisites are a basic course in probabil ity theory (including elementary martingale theory up to the optional sampling theorem) and a sound knowledge of measure theory (as, for example, to be found in Part I of H. Bauer [B 78]). Furthermore, an elementary course on lin ear operators on Banach and Hilbert spaces (but without spectral theory) and a course on Markov processes would be helpful though most of the material needed is included here.

Three case studies explore children s play spaces in Bonn, Germany. The city has a wealth of natural resources and a culture of dedication to the environment that made it ideal for a comparison of the presence of nature in play spaces. Over two weeks in October, three play spaces including the Auerberg neighborhood playground with minimal nature, the Hofgarten urban playground with some nature, and the Naturpark Rheinland trailhead with complete nature immersion were carefully documented. The case studies rely on graphics and photographs as well as quantitative data modeled after post occupancy evaluations by Clare Cooper Marcus and Carolyn Francis. A comparison of the three case studies suggests that topography may have a greater influence on natural play than the presence of tree canopy.

Moduli of Curves and Abelian Varieties

The present volume, with contributions of R. Dijkgraaf, C. Faber, G. van der Geer, R. Rain, E. Looijenga, and F. Oort, originates from the Dutch Intercity Seminar on Moduli (year 1995-96). Some of the articles here were discussed, in preliminary form, in the seminar; others are completely new. Two introductory papers, on moduli of abelian varieties and on moduli of curves, accompany the articles. Topics include a stratification of a moduli space of abelian varieties in positive characteristic, and the calculation of the classes of the strata, tautological classes for moduli of abelian varieties as well as for moduli of curves, correspondences between moduli spaces of curves, locally symmetric families of curves and jaco bians, and the role of symmetric product spaces in quantum field theory, string theory and matrix theory. This Intercity Seminar is part of the long term project 'Algebraic curves and Riemann surfaces: geometry, arithmetic and applications' , sponsored hy the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), that has been running since 1994. Its ancestry can be traced back to joint activities in the seventies (if not earlier), which as of 1980 had evolved into active biweekly research seminars. These have been a focal point of Dutch algebraic geometry and singularity theory since. We are grateful to NWO for its support for the project. C.F. thanks the Max-Planck-Institut fur Mathematik, Bonn, for support during the final stages of the preparation of this volume.

The dramatic representation of maritime spaces, characters and plots in Restoration and early eighteenth-century English theatres served as a crucial discursive negotiation of a burgeoning empire. This study focuses on 'staging the sea' in a period of growing maritime, commercial and colonial activity, a time when the prominence of the sea and shipping was firmly established in the very fabric of English life. As theatres were re-established after the Restoration, playhouses soon became very visible spaces of cultural activity and important locales for staging cultural contact and conflict. Plays staging the sea can be read as central in representing the budding maritime empire to metropolitan audiences, as well as negotiating political power and knowledge about the 'other'. The study explores well-known plays by authors such as Aphra Behn and William Wycherley alongside a host of more obscure plays by authors such as Edward Ravenscroft and Charles Gildon as cultural performances for negotiating cultural identity and difference in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Dr. Gunda Windmüller was born and raised in Cologne before moving to England, graduating with a BA in Politics and Sociology from the University of York. Returning to Germany, she completed a Masters degree in Comparative Literature, Politics and Sociology at the University of Bonn before completing a PhD in English Literature at the same institution.
