The liberalization of Pakistan’s media in 2002 led to the sector’s rapid development but has also resulted in numerous challenges for journalists including freedom of speech vs. self-censorship, and media liberalization vs. partial radicalization. Pakistan has also been repeatedly recognized as one of the most dangerous countries for journalists. On May 29, 2013 international and German Scholars from various disciplines and institutes came together in Bonn to discuss their research results regarding 'Pakistan’s Media Landscape: The Effects of Liberalization'.This publication provides a supplement to the presentations and discussions held at the fourth annual DW Akademie Media Dialogue

On the occasion of his 60th birthday in October 2009, friends, collaborators, and admirers of Wolfgang Dahmen have organized this volume which touches on va- ous of his research interests. This volume will provide an easy to read excursion into many important topics in applied and computational mathematics. These include nonlinear and adaptive approximation, multivariate splines, subdivision schemes, multiscale and wavelet methods, numerical schemes for partial differential and boundary integral equations, learning theory, and high-dimensional integrals. The Sounds of the Girgenti Dialect and Their Development is the first English translation of the dissertation submitted by Luigi Pirandello to the University of Bonn in partial fulfillment for a doctorate in Romance philology in 1891. The work presents a detailed account of the phonetics of Girgentine, the author's native Sicilian dialect. In it the young author corrects and supplements much of the philological work of his predecessors. This linguistic study should be of great interest to Pirandello scholars and students especially because of its relevance to the author's ideas on dialectology, and the many important but neglected works he produced in Sicilian.

The Fourth International Workshop on Meshfree Methods for Partial D- ferential Equations was held from September 17 to September 20, 2007 in Bonn, Germany. One of the major goals of this workshop series is to bring together European, American and Asian researchers working in this exciting ?eld of interdisciplinary research on a regular basis. To this end Ivo Babu? ska, Ted Belytschko, Michael Griebel, Antonio Huerta, Wing Kam Liu, and Harry Yserentant invited scientist from twelve countries to Bonn to strengthen the mathematical understanding and analysis of meshfree discretizations but also to promote the exchange of ideas on their implementation and application. The workshop was again hosted by the Institut fur Numerische Simu- tionattheRheinischeFriedrich-Wilhelms-Universit atBonnwiththe?nancial support of the Sonderforschungsbereich 611 Singular Phenomena and Scaling in Mathematical Models. This volume of LNCSE now comprises selected contributions of attendees of the workshop. Their content ranges from applied mathematics to physics and engineering. This is also an indication that meshfree methods for the numerical solution of partial di?erential equations are becoming more and more mainstream in many areas of applications due to their ?exiblity and wide applicability.

Meshfree Methods for Partial Differential Equat...

Over the past years meshfree methods for the solution of partial di?erential equations have signi?cantly matured and are used in various ?elds of appli- tions. One of the reasons for this development is the fact that meshfree d- cretizationsandparticlemodels areoftenbetter suitedto copewithgeometric changes of the domain of interest than mesh-based discretization techniques such as ?nite di?erences, ?nite elements or ?nite volumes. Furthermore, the computational costs associated with mesh generation are eliminated in me- free approaches, since they are based only on a set of independent points. From the modelling point of view, meshfree methods gained much interest in recent years since they may provide an e?cient and reliable approach to the coupling of contiuum models to particle models. In light of these developments the Sonderforschungsbereich 611 and the Gesellschaft fur Mathematik und Mechanik sponsored the second interna- tionalworkshoponMeshfreeMethodsforPartialDi?erentialEquations.Itwas hostedby the Institut fur Numerische Simulationatthe Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms Universit at Bonn from September 15 to September 17, 2003. The organizers Ivo Babu? ska, Ted Belytschko, Michael Griebel, Wing Kam Liu, Helmut Neunzert, and Harry Yserentant invited scientist from twelve co- tries to Bonn with the aim to bring together European, American and Asian researchers working in this exciting area of interdisciplinary research. The objective of the workshop was not only to strengthen the mathematical - derstanding and analysis of meshfree discretizations but also to promote the exchange of ideas on their implementation and application.

Energy Minimization Methods in Computer Vision ...

Overthelastdecades, energyminimizationmethods havebecomeanestablished paradigm to resolve a variety of challenges in the ?elds of computer vision and pattern recognition. While traditional approaches to computer vision were often based on a heuristic sequence of processing steps and merely allowed very l- ited theoretical understanding of the respective methods, most state-of-the-art methods are nowadays based on the concept of computing solutions to a given problem by minimizing respective energies. This volume contains the papers presented at the 7th International Conf- ence on Energy Minimization Methods in Computer Vision and Pattern Rec- nition (EMMCVPR 2009), held at the University of Bonn, Germany, August 24 28, 2009. These papers demonstrate that energy minimization methods have become a mature ?eld of research spanning a broad range of areas from discrete graph theoretic approaches and Markov random ?elds to variational methods and partial di?erential equations. Application areas include image segmentation and tracking, shape optimization and registration, inpainting and image deno- ing, color and texture modeling, statistics and learning. Overall, we received 75 high-quality double-blind submissions. Based on the reviewer recommendations, 36paperswereselectedforpublication,18asoraland18asposterpresentations. Both oral and poster papers were attributed the same number of pages in the conference proceedings. Furthermore, we were delighted that three leading experts from the ?elds of computer vision and energy minimization, namely, Richard Hartley (C- berra, Australia), Joachim Weickert (Saarbruc ken, Germany) and Guillermo Sapiro(Minneapolis,USA)agreedtofurtherenrichtheconferencewithinspiring keynote lectures.

This volume contains the proceedings of a NATO/London Mathematical Society Advanced Study Institute held in Oxford from 25 July - 7 August 1982. The institute concerned the theory and applications of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations, with emphasis on techniques appropriate to systems of more than one equation. Most of the lecturers and participants were analysts specializing in partial differential equations, but also present were a number of numerical analysts, workers in mechanics, and other applied mathematicians. The organizing committee for the institute was J.M. Ball (Heriot-Watt), T.B. Benjamin (Oxford), J. Carr (Heriot-Watt), C.M. Dafermos (Brown), S. Hildebrandt (Bonn) and J.S. pym (Sheffield) . The programme of the institute consisted of a number of courses of expository lectures, together with special sessions on different topics. It is a pleasure to thank all the lecturers for the care they took in the preparation of their talks, and S.S. Antman, A.J. Chorin, J.K. Hale and J.E. Marsden for the organization of their special sessions. The institute was made possible by financial support from NATO, the London Mathematical Society, the u.S. Army Research Office, the u.S. Army European Research Office, and the u.S. National Science Foundation. The lectures were held in the Mathematical Institute of the University of Oxford, and residential accommodation was provided at Hertford College.
