Praise for the Second Edition: "In opposition to most literature on how to conduct good social science research which is either empirically oriented or gives priority to theoretical and philosophical considerations, which tends to make empirical research look odd or irrelevant, this volume on 'Reflexive Methodology' explicitly turns towards a consideration of the perceptual, cognitive, theoretical, linguistic, political and cultural circumstances as backdrop of data interpretation and research design. It showed up to be the most important and informative resource and a source of enlightenment to my lecture on methodology at our institute. I can highly recommend the volume to lecturers and students alike." Professor Sabine Troeger, Geography Institute - Library, University of Bonn Reflexivity is an essential part of the research process. Mats Alvesson and Kaj Sköldberg make explicit the links between techniques used in empirical research and different research traditions, giving a theoretically informed approach to qualitative research. The authors provide balanced reviews and critiques of the major schools of grounded theory, ethnography, hermeneutics, critical theory, postmodernism and poststructuralism, discourse analysis, genealogy and feminism. Useful reading for students and researchers across the social sciences. The first edition established itself as a ground-breaking success, providing researchers with an invaluable guide to a central problem in research methodology - namely, how to put field research and interpretations in perspective, paying attention to the interpretive, political and rhetorical nature of empirical research. The second edition introduced a new chapter on positivism, social constructionism and critical realism, and offered new conclusions on the applications of methodology. This third edition of Reflexive Methodology provides further updates on new research, including neorealism, and illustrations and applications of reflexive methodology in formulating research strategies, that build on the acclaimed and successful previous editions

The Evolution of Sonata-Form Design in Beethove...

This work is an analytic and stylistic survey of sonata-form movements in Ludwig van Beethoven s early piano sonatas. Schenkerian theory is adopted as the primary methodology to illuminate questions of design and tonal structure posed by Beethoven s sonata-form movements. The dissertation takes the middle-period sonatas as a core repertoire and traces how Beethoven s compositional traits as seen in the early-period works evolve toward the middle period. Detailed analyses of sonata-form movements in the Bonn and early Vienna period incorporate available sources (such as analyses by Schenker, Roger Kamien, Janet Schmalfeldt, and others) and serve as the basis for stylistic generalizations about Beethoven s handling of sonata-form design and other compositional devices. This work shows that the structural designs and compositional devices in the early-period works evolve or innovate toward the middle-period models.

Econometric Modelling of European Money Demand

The introduction of a single European currency constitutes a remarkable instance of internationalization of monetary policy. Whether a concomitant internationalization can be detected also in the econometric foundations of monetary policy is the topic dealt with in this book. The basic theoretical ingredients comprise a data-driven approach to econometric modelling and a generalized approach to cross-sectional aggregation. The empirical result is a data-consistent structural money demand function isolated within a properly identified, dynamic macroeconomic system for Europe. The book itself evolved from a research project within the former Son derforschungsbereich SFB 178 "Internationalization of the Economy" at the University of Konstanz. Its finalization entails a due amount of gratitude to be extended into several directions: I am personally indebted, first of all, to my academic supervisor, Professor Dr. Nikolaus Laufer, for originally inspiring this work and for meticulously perusing its eventual result. Professor Dr. Win fried Pohlmeier, as a second supervisor, provided valuable confidence bounds around an earlier draft. The comments of both supervisors contributed substantially to the present shape of the book. I am institutionally indebted to the University of Konstanz, notably its Faculty of Economics and Statistics, for continuous provision of an excellent research environment, and to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft in Bonn for generous sponsorship of the former SFB, whose financial support dur ing that period is gratefully acknowledged. I am also indebted to Dresdner Bank AG Frankfurt, Risk Methodology Trading, for benign tolerance of all distractions associated with the preparation of the final manuscript.

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, University of Bonn (BWL 1 - Finanzwirtschaftliches Institut), course: Seminar 'Corporate Governance', 48 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: In this paper I outline the relationship between Corporate Governance (CG) and the valuation of a firm. Working through the huge body of empirical research I want to give a clear picture of the mechanisms and their relative importance in influencing the valuation. At first I clearly define what I am speaking about: What is Corporate Governance? What do I mean when I speak about 'Corporate Valuation'? Once the terms are clear the main question is: Why are these two things connected? What are the theoretical arguments? To evaluate the empirical findings I shortly describe beforehand the statistical problems and pitfalls that arise within this research. With this stable fundament I describe, comprehend and evaluate the descriptive research that has been done until today. Throughout this part I also pay attention to the used methodology. The aim is to give the reader a comprehensive and clear answer to the question how does Corporate Governance influence the Corporate Valuation.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2,0, International University of Applied Sciences Bad Honnef - Bonn, language: English, abstract: The comprehensive application of human resource controlling (HRC) instruments for measuring the contribution of human resource management (HRM) to corporate success is already fully implemented in larger corporations. In small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), however, HRC is predominantly insufficiently used. Knowing that, the research focused on components and possible approaches for HRC in SMEs. The research methodology combines the evaluation of relevant academic literature and primary data uncovered out of four expert interviews. The collected data revealed that the application of the controlling process which contains goal definition, performance measurement and comparison, variance analysis and corrective actions can enhance effectiveness and efficiency of HRM activities. Accordingly, an integrated HRC requires instruments which are operational and strategically aligned, relevant, goal and future oriented. Assessing the impact of HRM activities, possible controlling instruments are the balanced scorecard with its learning and growth perspective mainly important for HRM and the human resource scorecard (HRSC) which evaluates HRM activities in the scope of value creation for workforce success. Related measurements are, for instance, the audit and analytical approach, the full-time equivalent, the human resource portfolio and applications out of human capital management. Having compared HRC in larger corporations and SMEs, the research concludes that possible approaches for HRC should be implemented by executing a project and for further improvement of already existing HRC systems the introduction of a HRSC might be appropriate. Finally, HRC in SMEs should be based on an integrated HRM in order to evaluate and control HR activities operationally and strategically. Key words: Human resource management, HR-Controlling, Small and medium-sized enterprises

Value effects through voting block acquisition ...

Diploma Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Economy - Theory of Competition, Competition Policy, grade: 1,7, University of Bonn (Finanzwirtschaftliches Institut), 73 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The question if and how the ownership structure influences the market value of a firm is one of the most extensive studied subjects in corporate governance. Three main determinants were identified during more than 30 years of research: 1. The size of the block 2. The legal and regulatory environment 3. The type of blockholder This work uses the acquisition of voting blocks by different types of acquirers (point 3) to determine how the shareholder structure in Germany (point 2) influences the valuation of a firm. It is demonstrated that the heterogeneity between block acquirers has to be taken into account, i.e. the size of a block (acquisition) itself (point 1) is not a distinctive enough instrument to determine valuation aspects. The main results are that a block acquisition by banks in Germany results in a negative value effect. A cumulated abnormal return (CAR) of -2.7% in the event-period [-20,20] is the (average) consequence of a block-acquisition by a bank. A strong and highly significant result is the positive valuation effect when hedge funds acquire blocks in their targets. Average cumulated abnormal return is 5% in the period [-20,-1]. Corporations as block-acquirer cause also positive CAR's (1%). No significant effects are found following the announcement by mutual funds, insurances and individual investors. The work proceeds as follows: In chapter 2 the literature on general corporate governance and especially the literature concerned with the relation between shareholder structure and valuation is reviewed. The data for this study and its legal sources is described in chapter 3 and chapter 4 gives a short descriptive statistic. The main chapter, chapter 5, starts with an explanation why the event-study methodology is especially eligible to answer the question of how blockholding influences valuation. Then the used methodology is described and the results of the empirical work presented. These are put in the context of the respective literature and research. Chapter 6 is a short summary of the most important findings and concludes the work.
