The question of how German government agencies and ministries had been dealing with the Nazi-Past in the immediate aftermath of the war, has most recently attracted a high amount of attention. This development was stimulated by the study "Das Amt", published in 2010, discussing the Nazi-Past of the German Foreign Office. Continuity and changes in terms of institutions and personnel have been put into the focus of the discussion as well as substantive aspects of the policy of the first post-war governments in Germany. Several federal ministries and agencies have established commissions, in order to research their own history through independent scholars. Also the Federal Ministry of Justice has chosen this way in order to learn more about its national-socialist continuities. The several articles of this volume address different aspects of the way from the Nazi-legal system to the judiciary of the early Federal Republic of Germany. A main focus is put on the development of the Federal Ministry of Justice, which was residing in the so called Rosenburg in Bonn from 1950-1973. Issue is taken with questions of personnel, like recruitment and promotion policies, but also with crucial issues of legal policy, like the development of the German Constitution after 1948/49, the legislative power in the "Third Reich" and the early Federal Republic of Germany, the prosecution of war criminals in the immediate aftermath of the war, the beginning of criminal law policy in the Ministry as well as the developments in economy and family law.The "Independent Academic Commission at the Federal Ministry of Justice for the critical study of the national socialist past", so named by its official title, has hosted an academic symposium on April 26, 2012 in the "Kammergericht" in Berlin. The papers collected in this volume were mostly presented at that one-day symposiu.

from his weblog of the Ev. Akademie Bonn. The first text "Thank you Eve" sees in the so-called "Fall" from Gen. 2 the leap of man to cognitive thinking. Only through this did man become a human being in today's sense. The second text deals with the question of guilt for the death of Jesus. A guilt of the Jewish people is not recognizable from a historical-critical point of view. God's covenant with Israel has not been terminated, therefore a baptism of the Jews is unnecessary. Through Jesus-Christ we can be chosen. The third text deals with the question of Jesus' year of birth, which has not been completely clarified in research. Alternatives are addressed, including a research paper with new points of view. In the last text the author's aim is to show that theology and natural sciences are no longer opposites and complement each other. This is made possible by the latest results of quantum theory. This book has been translated with Artificial Intelligence.

Reflexive Pronouns. The Acquisition of "Self-Fo...

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Bonn, language: English, abstract: Prior linguistic knowledge - it seems plausible that the acquisition of a second language can be influenced by the learner's knowledge of structures and rules of his or her first language . Especially similarities between languages are probably tending to either facilitate the learning process or to impede it (cf. Gundel & Tarone 1994: 87). This cross-linguistic influence is called "language transfer", which can be described as negative when the application of L1 structures or rules on a L2 utterance leads to a linguistically incorrect expression (cf. Saville-Troike 2012: 19). Given the fact that similarities between languages might impede the learning process of the L2, the work in hand takes a closer look at reflexive pronouns in English and German. As "self-forms" in English and "sich-forms" in German look quite similar but differ in their use, they appear as a possible source of error for German learners of English. Therefore, the leading question of the paper is whether L2 English learners recognize the differences in the use of "self-forms" in English and the use of "sich" in German. The hypothesis is that, based on their L1 knowledge, German learners of English are likely to make use of reflexive pronouns more often than necessary. In other words, it is assumed that a negative language transfer is likely to occur due to the formal similarities between the L1 and L2. Further information on the theoretical basis of the study will be given in the second chapter, followed by the part on methodology that includes information on the informants, the research instruments, and the data collection procedure. In the following two chapters, the results of the study will be presented and, with regard to possible explanations and limitations, discussed. Finally, the main findings of the paper will be summarized. The reason for conducting this study is, in the first place, that the problem of language transfer is of great importance for the learner's learning process of English as L2. Especially teachers of English should be aware of common sources of error, so they might be able to predict possible linguistic problems and support their students at their best to avoid such mistakes (cf. Odlin 1990: 4). Furthermore, previous studies in the field of cross-linguistic examinations on reflexive pronouns mainly referred to binding conditions and the like, whereas this paper deals with the frequency and correct application of reflexives by learners of English as L2.

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,7, University of Bonn, language: English, abstract: Passing by Nella Larsen, published in 1929, features the issue of racial passing in a society which segregates people of Negro descent from the dominant white American class. Wall claims that "Not only is Passing set in Harlem at the height of its vogue, it is itself a product of the vogue. Aptly then, it acknowledges the opportunities as well as the risks that the more fluid racial and cultural boundaries of the period created". Irene Redfield, one of the two female protagonists, is able to pass, but still chose a life within Harlem and a coloured husband. Her counterpart Clare Kendry, on the contrary, is completely passing by being married to a white man who does not know about her descent. Still, she is highly fascinated by the life Irene leads in Harlem and thus she attempts at leading a double-life. As Clare becomes increasingly involved in the black culture of that time, she also has to fear about her husband finding out the truth about her.In order to set the issue of racial passing in a historical and cultural framework, I attempt at focusing on the connection between the novel and a jurisdictional case from 1925, called the Rhinelander Case. This case is also being referred to in Passing: "What if Bellew should divorce Clare? Could he? There was the Rhinelander case". Furthermore, Madigan claims the following: "That Larsen has the case enter Irene's mind so quickly, however, testifies to the Rhinelanders' importance to discussions of miscegenation, the law, and racial passing during the period of the Harlem Renaissance". Leonard Kip Rhinelander, who was from the upper white class of New York, got married to Alice Jones, who was mixed-raced and from the working class. Rhinelander attempted at annulling the marriage as he claimed he had not known about his wife's race before the wedding. She countered by claiming that he has known about their race before their marriage as it was unmistakable. The jury the young couple had to face was all-male and white. Thereupon, this term paper will deal with the following research question: How can the relationship between the Rhinelander Case and Nella Larsen's Passing be defined and which are the means by which this relationship is being constituted?

Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 2,0, International University of Applied Sciences Bad Honnef - Bonn, course: Current Issues in Accounting & Finance, language: English, abstract: In the past, key financial instruments were focusing on concepts like the return on investment, return on equity and return on capital employed. However, within recent years, the flaws of the named ratios made it difficult to thoroughly rely on such figures any longer. As one key drawback connected to those solely finance-related ratios was that all non-financial aspects are missed out on. Further, the economic value creation was not respected in past models. EVA®, economic value added, is a concept on the rise that counteracts the flaws of recent financial ratios. By accounting for both the capital charges for investors and creditors, it allows a more sophisticated look into the value creation of a company. However Stern Steward & Co, who founded EVA®, give recommendations, so called adjustments, in order to make EVA® even more effective as it is without. As economic decision are not only covered by introducing a new ratio, it is important to contrast and to integrated EVA® to other frequently used financial models. Here, the net present value calculation is used most when evaluating on whether or not to take on a project. Now, the author shows that EVA® even can be used for net present value calculations, which is usually done by taking into consideration future cash flows. Further, economic profit is not all a modern business has to care about. In this respect, cash management has evolved in becoming a crucial cornerstone in financial management. Hence, the author has compared the cash conversion cycle to the EVA®. The questions is, does liquidity also affect the EVA® result? Finally, the author concludes on whether or not EVA® can be regarded as 'the one financial ratio' an how it interplays with other important models used in modern companies.

Iconicity in brand names. An analysis of TV ads

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 2.3, University of Bonn (Institut für Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Keltologie), course: Issues in Linguistic: Semantics, language: English, abstract: Do brand names have an iconic function, or are they rather arbitrary, just like Saussure claimed concerning linguistic signs in general? And if they have an iconic function, does the iconicity of brand names serve its purpose, i.e. do the icons transport the connotation they are supposed to? These questions are going to be answered in this paper with the single focus on phonetic phenomena. "Linguistics and semiotics still labor under the shadow of Saussure (1916), even though throughout the 20th century there have been repeated demonstrations that arbitrariness is quite limited". With this statement, Waugh (1992:7) gets to the heart of a problem which is by far not new but still current. While Saussure worked out the relationship between 'signified' and 'signifier', i.e. between an object and its sign, as arbitrary and therefore totally insignificant, no small number of scientists back the assumption that there are indeed certain meanings behind morphological and phonetic symbols, what builds the base for the entire study of iconicity. Iconicity itself is defined as the connection between an object and its linguistic sign, which is called an 'icon' or 'iconic sign' if the relationship between this object and its sign "depends on similarity [...] or on some relation analogous to similarity" (Hilpinen 2012:267). An icon might include a proper description of the object and therefore transport a certain denotation for exactly this object. This paper, however, makes brands and their iconic (or non-iconic) names a subject of discussion. Brand names are, for certain reasons, by no means denotations, i.e. they do not 'describe' the object, but are supposed to transport a meaning which is of importance for the consumer, and therefore supposed to trigger special connotations with the brand. In other words, the connection between brand name and connotation is important rather than the connection between brand name and product.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Prof. Dr. Johann Carl Fuhlrott was born December 31, 1803 in Leinefelde, Germany, and died October 17, 1877 in Elberfeld, (Wuppertal). He is famous for recognizing the significance of the bones of Neanderthal 1, a Neanderthal specimen discovered by German laborers who were digging for limestone in Neanderthal (Neander Valley in German) in August 1856. Originally disregarded, Fuhlrott, to his eternal credit, had the insight to recognize them for what they were: the remains of a previously unknown type of human. His parents were the innkeeper Johannes Philipp Fuhlrott and his wife Maria Magdalena, née Nussbaum. His parents had died by the time he was ten and he was raised by his uncle, the Catholic priest Carl Bernhard Fuhlrott in Seulingen. In 1835 he married Josepha Amalia Kellner (1812 1850), with whom he had six children. After studying mathematics and natural sciences at the University of Bonn, Fuhlrott became a teacher at the Gymnasium in Elberfeld. In 1856, workers in a lime quarry in the nearby canyon called Gesteins or Neanderthal (Neandertal southwest of Mettmann) showed him bones they had found in a cave and thought to belong to a bear.
